For a seastead there are different types of autonomy.
- Prepper Autonomoy
- Oceanic Hub Autonomy
Preppers base their concept on the idea that all supply lines will fail and you need to be autosufficient in the sense of “needing nothing from outside”.
A oceanic hub is like Venice it is extremly interconnected with all oceanic supply lines and can change supply lines that are cut with other supply lines inmediatly. Althogh Venice was “extremly dependent on food supply” - in its time of glory it was the only city that could not supply its food from the “surrounding fields” because it had no agriculture. In its 1500 years of history brokering power around it the city was never cut off from supply. A 3600 ship merchant fleet always kept supply flowing to the city in a convenient way - no matter what war, embargo, political coalition, was going on on the continent among land nations.
So if a oceanic city plays its cards right it can be both “extremly vulnerable and dependent on supply” and robust and autonomous in its free spirit subdue to nobody - thanks to uncutable oceanic supply lines.
A good way to understand that dynamics is to study the sand war in Singapore
A seastead with prepper autonomy will be well suited for a single private investor, it will not have a big growth potential and will tend to be home to a “sectarian kind of population” which is not good for business and interchange. It might fit the purpose of a business headquarter.
A seastead with ocean hub autonomy will be a project that has a big potential for growth, business, and becomming a new Venice at sea, it will tend to openess, free spirit, shipment, transshipment, port functions, ship service functions, just as its historic model.
The correct seasteading business setup formula depends on the investors.
